Sterling Shores for Families

beachHosted Accommodations

We were not actually supposed to stay at Sterling Shores this summer.

I had arranged a stay at another Sterling Resorts property to visit and write about it as a family friendly destination, but plans changed and we were informed we would now be at Sterling Shores.

This was absolutely no problem.

I had visited Sterling Shores last winter on a girlfriends getaway and loved everything about it. The only problem was that it was too cold when we visited in February to really enjoy the beach and the pools – so this time we would be able to experience both!

The previous trip had been with girlfriends, but this beach trip was all about this boy. This perfect, darling boy. Our grandson.

Wes and shark

The past few years, I have taken our grown daughter and grandson on summer vacations to a variety of destinations. It’s a great time to spend time and bond with both of them, and we have a wonderful time together. We were all excited to head to Destin as we love the beach.

We pulled up to beautiful Sterling Shores and they were both very impressed. It really is a pretty location, and extremely well-maintained.

My Marvelous Mox Shoes

19049942-A-sexy-cartoon-pin-up-girl-wearing-red-dress--Stock-VectorProduct Provided

A while back, I stumbled on a web site where someone was talking about these completely darling and comfortable shoes. I am all about completely darling and comfortable shoes so I kept reading and looking at photos and then I had a shoe flashback.

Jelly shoes were hugely popular back in the early 80’s and everyone was wearing them in every color, including sparkly ones. Those of us who were young mothers with no money particularly liked them because they were extremely cheap as well as comfortable. I had several colors and so did my little girl. The only disadvantage to them was that dirt tended to slip in through the designs and you ended up with colorfully designed, rather dirty feet when you took them off.

But still, we loved them.

So when I found information about Mox Shoes which looked similar to my beloved Jelly shoes, I was enthralled. They were kind enough to send me a pair to review, which arrived just in time for me to take to France and test them out. I was in love from the moment I took them out of the package. They were darling!

So cute!

So cute!

I'm in love!

I’m in love!

But when I slipped them on, I really fell in love because they were so soft and comfortable. Unlike Jelly shoes which were made with PVC plastic and could be a little stiff and uncomfortable, these are made with 100% man-made rubber which is very soft and pliable. I was honestly surprised that they fit so well since my feet are narrow but they seemed to warm up to conform and fit even better the longer I wore them. Read more »

The Charming Hotel de L’Horloge in Avignon, France

Hosted Accommodations

We loved everything about our stay in the lovely, Medieval walled city of Avignon, France. After a completely exhausting trip from the United States to Marseilles which included an unexpected three-hour wait for our next flight at the Paris airport, we were finally able to relax on the short train ride from Marseilles to Avignon the next day.

We knew nothing about the Hotel de L’Horloge except what we had seen online and the fact that they were helpful and friendly by email. We were pleased to find they were just as helpful and friendly in person, and the hotel was absolutely beautiful. We walked from the train station with our luggage as the hotel is located conveniently close to the station. Just be sure to take the train which goes to Avignon Centre, not the TGV (high speed train) which is in the suburbs so you would have to take a taxi to the town center.

Welcome!

Welcome!

The 4 star hotel is located right in the middle of town within an easy walk to the famous tourist landmarks like the Pont d’Avignon and the Palais des Papes. It is in a beautiful, historic building which blends into the surrounding, equally historic buildings beautifully.

You can see the side of the hotel on the right.

Experience the Great Outdoors with Kids in Door County

IMG_6922

Kayaking in beautiful Door County

Often referred to as the “Cape Cod of the Midwest” because of its charming lighthouses, beautiful beaches, water sports, and wonderful restaurants featuring locally caught fresh fish, Door County is a great, family vacation destination.

You will find plenty of kid-friendly attractions throughout the area, and with dozens of beaches and five of Wisconsin’s expansive and beautifully maintained state parks, you can swim, hike, bike, fish, or participate in a variety of water sports and other fun outdoor activities.

1. Kayaking is a great activity for any family vacation because it’s appropriate for almost any age, even young children as they can share a double kayak with an adult. Gravity Trails is a Door County company that offers an innovative kayaking excursion called the Clear Bottom Shipwreck Tour, an area is famous for the many shipwrecks. The double kayaks have a clear plastic insert in the floor between your feet so you can look right into the water to see rocks, plants, small fish and the tumbled wooden remains of shipwrecks.

From Nice to Naughty: When Good Travelers Go Bad

We have been fortunate to never witness really bad behavior when traveling (although we have been sorely tempted to display some of our own when exhausted) although we have seen plenty of very rude people. But these statistics may open your eyes to what is happening out there!

This post was posted by The Hipmunk on Hipmunk’s  Tailwind blog on September 2.

Being in a foreign environment tends to provide travelers with a feeling of anonymity. It’s regarded as a space governed by different social rules, and while abroad people often engage in behavior that they would normally not allow. But we wanted to know just how naughty they would actually get—or at least, what they would cop up to.

From stealing food to skinny dipping, Hipmunk got the dirt (anonymously, of course) on just how badly travelers behave while en voyage. Scroll down after the infographic for even more naughty traveler behavior:

The Fabulous Viking Delling Longship

Viking DellingEven though we technically didn’t cruise very far on our still wonderful cruise with Viking River Cruises, we absolutely enjoyed every minute on the gorgeous Viking Delling Longship. From the moment we arranged our cruise with Viking, we experienced nothing but completely professional service. One of the first clues we had that we were going to enjoy a really First Class cruise was when we received our beautiful, leather luggage tags. Nothing plastic or tacky about these babies.

So classy!

So classy!

Although we did have issues with the cruise not departing from Avignon, that was completely beyond the control of the Viking folks, and they did everything within their power to make us comfortable in Avignon in a very nice hotel, and provided us with all the local experiences on which we had planned.

During this time, the crew of the Viking Delling who were with us were nothing but professional, friendly, patient (even in trying circumstances and with some very trying passengers), humorous, and quite frankly, a wonderful introduction for us to the Viking company.

As soon as humanly possible, we actually boarded the Delling in Vienne for what would be a short cruise to Lyon and what turned out to be the only time we spent cruising the entire week. We were immediately impressed when we boarded the beautiful longship. Gorgeously decorated, open and airy, sumptuously comfortable…well. Here, watch this. Then I’ll tell you about our experience.

We were welcomed by the crew into the beautiful atrium of the Delling where we checked in and were then escorted to our stateroom. The atrium is open and airy with big windows, the check-in desk where you can get help if needed, and the entrance to the dining room.

Up the stairs (or the elevator) there is comfortable seating, the library, the lounge and entrance to the Aquavit Terrace, an outside dining area, and more staterooms. Read more »

Girlfriends Getaway to Marvelous Maryland!

maryland1Although we have discovered that many of the states we visit are radically different from our home state of Kentucky – think Arizona with mind boggling deserts and cactus – we actually felt very much at home on our girls’ trip to Maryland.

Of course, Maryland has a beautiful coastline and mountains but Ellicott City, Maryland where the Turf Valley Resort is located reminded us very much of Kentucky with lush, green rolling hills. We were in charming little Ellicott City for a few days for a girlfriends getaway at lovely Turf Valley for the first time and we loved every single thing about this delightful place.

Turf Valley is owned and run by the Mangione family – quite literally the entire family. During our visit, the Nick Mangione Italian Classic golf tournament was being held as the resort has two of the most beautiful golf courses in Maryland and we were introduced to several generations of the Mangione family, from the youngest to the oldest who work in everything from the kitchen to public relations for the resort.

Turf Valley was originally a thoroughbred horse farm which is probably one of the reasons we felt at home as it strongly resembles the blue grass country of our home in Lexington, Kentucky. The Mangione family purchased Turf Valley in 1978 when it was just a quiet golf country club and proceeded to expand it into the luxury resort it has become. Spread out over 1,000 acres, the resort features two championship 18 hole golf courses, two swimming pools, three tennis courts, a fabulous spa, and more than 40,000 square feet of meeting and event space. It’s a very popular spot for all kinds of events of all sizes, including weddings.
