Food on the Fly: Successful Self-Catering

When we were in Paris, we walked across the street from our very swanky hotel to the grocery store in the basement of a shopping center, bought sandwiches, chips, and fruit, then brought it all back to our room and had a bed picnic. Much cheaper than any restaurant meal – and more fun! Here’s a few more ideas.

This post was posted by The Hipmunk on Hipmunk’s  Tailwind blog on September 11.

self-catering-945x546Picture yourself at lunch in Paris, sitting at a sidewalk café, eating salade niçoise and gazing at the Eiffel Tower in the distance. Perfection, non? Doesn’t get much better than that.

Unless, of course, you were dining in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower.

This is the magic of self-catering. Skipping the restaurant meals in favor of a grocery bag full of goodies can lead to magical travel memories of perfect picnics, exotic delicacies and adventurous eating. You’ll also save a little money along the way. Start turning meals into memories with these tips for successful self-catering.

The San Juan Islands:

About a three-and-a-half-hour drive north, the San Juan Islands are a must-see destination for out-of-towners. The San Juan Islands are composed of 172 individual islands, but four (San Juan Island, Orcas Island, Lopez Island, and Shaw Island) are served by ferries and feature activities for visitors. For wine aficionados, visiting San Juan Vineyards, located on the main San Juan Island, is well worth the drive –  their well-regarded wines have won many awards. A definitive guide to outlets around the world and how to use adapters without frying your electronics

I’m ashamed to tell you that we actually fried our little travel fan in Ireland because we used the wrong adapter! Here’s an article that may help.

This post was posted by The Hipmunk on Hipmunk’s  Tailwind blog on September 10.

guide-outlets-adapters-945x630These days, most of us want to travel with our electrical gadgets, whether that be a cell phone, tablet or similar mobile device, laptop, camera, music player or hairdryer. But not using the right power adapter when you are traveling can be worse than an inconvenience–it can damage equipment and lead to electrical failures. What’s more, it can be hard to find the adapter you need in some parts of the world, so it’s always best to travel prepared.

While most modern electronics are able to take 220 or 110 volt (V) power, many devices still need adapters even if you don’t have to convert the voltage. An adapter will allow you to connect to the power supply for the country you are in.

Kringle, the Official State Pastry of Wisconsin

Kringle with ForkThere is a lot to enjoy in the charming small town of Racine, Wisconsin. Located on the shore of beautiful Lake Michigan between Milwaukee and Chicago, Racine has lovely beaches, parks and trails; Frank Lloyd Wright architecture; an amazing art museum; zoo; and the Wind Point Lighthouse. The lake provides plenty of opportunities for fishing, canoeing, kayaking, and other watersports, and area restaurants provide any international delicacy you can imagine.

But speaking of delicacies, there was one we knew we had to sample when we were in Racine. The Kringle. A Scandinavian pastry, the Kringle is a Nordic form of a pretzel which can be filled with a variety of sweet options. Kringles are hand-rolled from Danish pastry dough which has rested overnight. The sheets of flaky dough are layered, then shaped into an oval, filled with fruit, nuts, or other flavors, and then baked and iced.

Celebrate National Bourbon Heritage Month With This Three-Day Kentucky Bourbon Tour

Although we actually live in Lexington, Kentucky, I’m embarrassed to say that we haven’t visited any of these distilleries. That needs to change immediately.

This post was posted by The Hipmunk on Hipmunk’s  Tailwind blog on September 18.

Bourbon

In 2007, Congress declared September to be America’s National Bourbon Heritage Month—so it’s time to get sipping.

The most popular type of whiskey in the U.S., bourbon is made from a grain mixture (aka “mash”) that’s at least 51 percent corn. Federal law also mandates that bourbon must be aged in new, charred oak barrels and bottled at 80 proof or stronger, and nothing other than distilled water can be added to the bottles.

There’s no better place to celebrate this American spirit than in its birthplace: Kentucky’s Bourbon Country. Fly into Lexington and prepare to drink up on this multi-day tour.
