The Leo Carrillo Ranch, Carlsbad

thWhen the Leo Carrillo Ranch in Carlsbad was suggested as a place to visit when we were in the area, we had no idea what to expect.

A ranch right in the middle of this developed area?

But we are so glad we fit a visit into our schedule. It’s a beautiful, serene area to explore.

Hidden away in the middle of the lovely 27-acre canyon, the historic park contains hand-crafted adobe buildings, antique windmills, and plenty of other historic structures, along with beautiful landscaping and the resident, brilliantly plumed peacocks.

In 1937, Leo Carrillo, who was a renowned actor most famous for starring as Pancho in “The Cisco Kid”, a popular television series about two Robin Hood like desperadoes in the American West, wanted to find a retreat where he could build an old California-style working rancho. He came across the Rancho de Los Kiotes and bought 840 acres where he began construction of several structures. Over time, the ranch spread out over 2,538 beautiful acres. Leo loved visitors and welcomed plenty of them to the ranch – many of whom were the major stars of the day. They spent time horseback riding all over the huge ranch.

Welcome!

Welcome!

We left the “June Gloom” of the coast behind and actually drove into a gorgeous, sunny day. We pulled into the gravel parking lot of the ranch and were immediately entranced by the lovely landscaping and historic wooden and Adobe buildings scattered all over the property. Only a very small remnant of the ranch remains today but it has been turned into a historic park and visitor destination.

Wild Dunes Resort in Isle of Palms

14880410-illustration-of-a-beach-house-with-surfboards-resting-on-the-sideI put my book in my lap, stretched out on the wide, cushioned couch in the living room of our fabulous condo at the Wild Dunes Resort and glanced over at my SIL who was still happily engrossed in her book.

There were many, many things we enjoyed about our stay at this lovely oceanfront community hidden away on the Isle of Palms but the fact that we had two couches in our living room was very  high on the list.

With over 240 rental properties scattered all over the property which included anywhere from one to seven bedrooms, there were plenty of locations to choose from but we were very happy with our two bedroom condo.

Located just a short walk away from the beach and a short drive to pools, restaurants, shops, and the spa, we were in a perfect location. The one tiny problem we had was no Wi-Fi or cell phone reception at our condo but that was easily remedied at other locations on the resort and we found it surprisingly relaxing to be out of touch when we were in the condo.

All the rentals at the Wild Dunes Resort come with a full kitchen, washer and dryer, cable television, telephone with an answering machine, and housekeeping if you stay more than seven days. The prices are very reasonable and they have even better rates for an extended stay of three weeks or more from October through March. We spent a great deal of time on this visit just relaxing and this location was the perfect place for it. You can get an idea about how fabulous the place is by checking out their videos on youtube.

Getaway to the City by the Bay: San Francisco

sfThe first thing you need to know about your getaway to this beautiful city is that you are probably going to be cold. It doesn’t matter if it is winter, spring, summer or fall, San Francisco is pretty much always chilly, especially near the bay, so wear layers or tuck a wrap or sweater in your bag because it’s better to be prepared than to freeze.

This hospitable and beautiful city is so friendly that they love dogs just about as much as people. Everyone in San Francisco seems to own a dog so they are pretty much welcome everywhere, even in many of the hotels. This is certainly true at the kitschy, boutique Argonaut Hotel which is located in the historic Haslett Warehouse right on Fisherman’s Wharf. The gorgeous brick building offers truly unique accommodations, many with exposed brick walls and wooden beams and views of the Golden Gate Bridge. Built in 1907 but beautifully restored, you will enjoy the warm fireplace in the lobby and the complimentary hosted evening wine hour.

Photo Friday: Paris Hotel in Las Vegas

When we visited Las Vegas and stayed at the Paris Hotel, we had actually been to Paris, France just a few months prior to that. So the Paris Hotel was very surprising in how accurately it portrayed parts of Paris. Tom got this shot of the Eiffel Tower at the hotel.

Fabulous Dining Experience at Cielo in St. Louis

Cielo Restaurant & Bar on Urbanspoon

Hosted Meal

It was a most excellent surprise.

Most excellent.

We were checking in for my completely fabulous spa experience at the Four Seasons Spa (more on that later) and they asked if we were planning on cocktails at Cielo after my massage?

Uh. Well.

No. No, we weren’t.

But we could manage to spare some time for a cocktail. After all, our plan for the rest of the evening consisted of putting on our pajamas and relaxing in our hotel suite as we binge-watched “Modern Family” reruns on television.

So, yes. Yes, we could plan on a cocktail even though I was concerned that we were not dressed correctly. In shorts and tennis shoes for our day of trekking around the city, we were not exactly outfitted for cocktails. But when we were chilling in the relaxation room of the spa and Alper Oztok, the General Manager of the Four Seasons Hotel in St. Louis and Cory Cuff, the Cielo Bar and Restaurant Manager, along with one of the chefs from the restaurant appeared to welcome us to the hotel and invite us to Cielo personally, they all assured us the casual dress was no problem.

They were quite lovely and gracious liars because we really should have been dressed nicer.

However.

We would have cheerfully gone to Cielo in our pajamas if we had known what was in store for us.

After my Signature Massage which was so completely marvelous in every way that I should be forgiven for possibly just sliding out of my chair in the restaurant and slumping to the floor under the table in a fit of massage-induced slumber (thank heavens this did not happen because I would have been so sad to miss the food we were about to experience) we headed up to Cielo for our cocktails. The restaurant is an absolutely gorgeous expanse of modern furniture, lovely golden lighting, and quite possibly the best view of St. Louis in the entire city. We actually may have audibly gasped when Cory ushered us to our table by the floor to ceiling windows and we saw the cityscape with the Arch arcing over the expanse. With comfortable seating, a heated pool, and a jacuzzi, I might never leave this area if we were staying in the hotel.

Five Fabulous Fall Beach Destinations

Beach-Walkway-300x224The official first day of fall has come and gone, the weather is slowly getting cooler and the days shorter so beach vacations may seem like a thing of the past at this point but, in reality, this is absolutely the best time of the year to visit many beaches. After Labor Day, the crowds diminish as children head back to school, and the prices are lowered, but the weather in many of these areas is still warm enough to enjoy the beach, have a swim, have some great seafood, shop and visit the local spa.

Here are five suggestions for locations we have visited in the fall that make perfect beach destinations for this time of year.

1. Tybee Island, Georgia. Located right off the coast of Savannah and frequently referred to as “Savannah’s Beach”, small and quaint Tybee is a beautiful place with lovely, tan sand beaches and some great

seafood restaurants. We have stayed in a darling, hot pink cottage steps from the beach we rented from Mermaid Cottages and a sprawling, luxurious, huge beach house just a few blocks away from the beach that we rented from Tybee Joy Vacations. Both rental agencies have a wide variety of cottages and houses available. Be sure to have dinner one night at Coco’s Sunset Grille and order the fried strawberries for dessert – they are unique and incomparable! Savannah is only a 15-20 minute drive away so spend a day taking a Segway tour, shopping on River Street, walking through the gorgeous neighborhoods of mansions and parks then have dinner at The Pirates House where sailors were shanghaied years ago to serve on sailing ships.

A Getaway to Hilton Head Island

Relax at the beautiful Sonesta Resort.

Relax at the beautiful Sonesta Resort.

Hilton Head Island is tucked neatly up against the South Carolina coast, so close that it is just a short drive over a marsh-lined causeway to get there, yet only a short distance from the cities of both Charleston and Savannah. Your first glimpse of the lush foliage and the businesses and resorts which are hidden away, well back from the road, gives you your first clue that this not your typical island getaway.

The island’s Natural Resources Division enforces the Land Management Ordinance which minimizes the impact of local development and even governs the style of buildings and how they are situated among the native trees. You won’t recognize the McDonald’s and Wal-Mart here; they are small, built of materials which blend into the environment, and surrounded by trees.

The beach at Hilton Head is amazing; it’s absolutely huge at low tide with plenty of tide pools for kids to splash in and hard packed sand for bike riding. Most of the island is sublimely private, located inside gated communities and resorts but there are also several public beach access points. One of the nicest resorts on the island is the recently renovated Sonesta Resort. Beautifully redone with a focus on orange and other colors of the beautiful island sunsets, the resort is located on 11 beautifully landscaped, beachfront acres which contain water features, gorgeous flowers and plenty of butterflies and birds attracted by the colorful foliage. The resort offers several swimming pools, an active kids program for 3 – 12 year olds, bike rentals, tennis, golf, a fabulous spa and some great dining options.

West Inn and Suites in Carlsbad, California

MH900436276Hosted Meal

It was the cold milk and cookies at bedtime that did it.

That was what made us realize we should have stayed at the West Inn and Suites when we were in Carlsbad.

Let me back up.

We don’t normally write reviews for hotels where we have not actually stayed.

But we made an exception this time because our PR contact person, Hilary Townsend with Townsend PR, had invited us to dinner at one of the restaurants by the hotel, Bistro West, and was just so kind and friendly that we enjoyed every minute.

It’s always a little awkward when you plan a meal with a stranger you have never met, which happens often in our business. We meet PR people from agencies, hotels, restaurants, etc. on every trip and, even though we may have some reservations about meeting strangers, we have never been disappointed. It seems people in that business are just generally pretty nice and friendly.

Hilary was no exception. We met her at the entrance to Bistro West after wandering up the street in the wrong direction because we were sure that was the right direction and…well. We finally made it. She ushered us into the restaurant where the delicious smells and lovely ambience made us even hungrier than we already were. The hotel actually has two restaurants right next door which make it very convenient when you are staying there. They also offer a sumptuous free breakfast buffet right in the hotel, so you never have to leave for a meal.
