Top 10 Tips on How to Take a Stress-Free Girlfriends Getaway

Beach GirlsMy husband does not like the beach and he does not like shopping. These happen to be two of my very favorite things so if I want to experience them; I have to take my girlfriends when I travel. Luckily, I have great girlfriends and some family members who are also good friends so it’s not a problem to find travel partners. Making sure those friends are also good travel partners who will provide a fun and stress-free vacation, however, takes a little foresight and planning. Here’s how you can also organize the perfect girlfriends getaway.

1. Choose your travel companions carefully. There is nothing quite like a trip together to really show how much you can get along with your friends. If you have a problem having lunch together and argue over the least little thing, this is probably not a person you want to share a hotel room with for a week. I just spent ten days at three different resorts with my sister-in-law and we never had one disagreement. She is sweet, easygoing and the perfect travel partner. I would travel with her anytime. I have acquaintances who indicate often they would love to go on a trip with me sometime. Believe me, that will never happen with some of them.

2. Talk about money. It’s vitally important to know how much (or at least a general idea) your travel companions have in mind to spend on this trip. Nobody wants to run out of money in the middle of a vacation. If they want to order expensive champagne with dinner, that’s just fine, but if they expect their friends to share the cost, that’s something that needs to be discussed. On a recent trip, I really wanted to spend time at the local outlet mall. My friend really didn’t have money for that on this trip. No problem, I can do that on another trip.

Photo Friday: Fountain at Butchart Gardens

We were truly amazed at the incredible variety of plant life at Butchart Gardens when we visited on our Un-Cruise Adventures cruise of British Columbia. Tom took hundreds of photos and this fountain is one of my favorites.

Paradise Adventures in Panama City Beach

Catamaran IllustrationHosted Activity

We are all about the beach when we take a beach vacation and our visit to Panama City Beach was no exception. The soft, sugar-white sand and gorgeous aquamarine water of this coast along the Gulf of Mexico are truly some of the most beautiful of any beach I have lounged upon.

But sometimes – especially when you have your seven-year old grandson with you – you just have to find some adventures aside from lolling in a beach chair. Luckily, Paradise Adventures came to our rescue with an incredible afternoon of fun activities.

Paradise Adventures features a Catamaran called the “Privateer” which is a 55 foot, Coast Guard certified Catamaran that can carry up to 49 passengers for a variety of adventures. The Catamaran has a large and roomy deck with lots of seating, sunning nets, a shaded cockpit where you can cool off which also has a full bar, two restrooms. and an attached slide off the back of the boat. It departs from the Pirates Cove marina off Thomas Drive which is really easy to find and has plenty of free parking. Your ticket entitles you to one free drink either alcoholic or non-alcoholic and they also have snacks for sale.

They offer a variety of sails that include: private charters, specialty cruises, birthday parties, singles cruises, weddings, bachelor/bachelorette sails, corporate sails and more, and also have special events which you can check out on their web site. They also have sunset sails, early morning cruises, dolphin viewing trips and the one who chose – an afternoon filled with adventure at “Paradise Island” which is also known as Shell Island, just off the coast.

We picked up our tickets in the office, then headed down the dock to board the large Catamaran, along with several other families. It was a beautiful, sunny day – absolutely perfect for an afternoon on the water.

Embassy Suites Downtown: St. Louis

illustrationHosted Accommodations

If we could have chosen the perfect hotel for our stay in St. Louis, that hotel would have been an Embassy Suites.

We have stayed in them previously and there is just nothing like their expansive, two room suites and that incredible, complimentary hot breakfast. So it was certainly fortunate that the Embassy Suites Downtown works with the local CVC to provide accommodations for visiting travel writers because we loved every single thing about our stay at this lovely hotel.

We pulled up in front of the historic Laurel Building where the Embassy Suites is located and took a minute to appreciate the beauty of this location. This is not your usual chain hotel but instead a distinctive, unusual, and luxurious hotel in the middle of the Mercantile Exchange District, a vital and every-changing landscape of restaurants, shops, and a huge movie theater right across the street. The all-suite LEED certified hotel is right across from America’s Center Convention Complex where the St. Louis Visitors Center is located so it’s easy to drop in to get information about local attractions.

It’s also just a short walk to the Edward Jones Dome, the home of the NFL’s St. Louis rams, the famous Arch by the Mississippi River, and the Lumiere Casino which is accessed through an underground, well-lit tunnel so you don’t have to deal with crossing busy streets.

We loved everything about Mackinac Island but one of the most interesting was the Butterfly House where Tom got some great photos of the many butterflies flitting around.

Sonesta Resort, Hilton Head Island

girl on beachHosted Accommodations    It was the suite that enthralled us the most.

The gorgeously renovated resort and everything about it made us very happy we had chosen to stay at the Sonesta Resort in Hilton Head, South Carolina but our completely fabulous one bedroom suite topped the list.

My SIL and I were on a girlfriends getaway, the Sonesta Resort was the second of three locations we visited, and it was very difficult to say which was our favorite.

But that suite!

We pulled up in front of the Sonesta Resort, tucked away on Shipyard Drive in a perfectly lovely 11 acres filled with trees, blooming flowers, and glimpses of the Atlantic Ocean, and were immediately very impressed by the beauty of the place. We were greeted by the staff who must have instantly memorized our names because every time we left the resort during the rest of our stay, they called us by name. Not only were they friendly; they were thoughtful as well, inquiring about whether we needed directions and even recommending restaurants and shops to us.

The resort has recently gone through a $30 million renovation and offers a fabulous swimming pool complex where we spent most of our time lolling in the sun, the Arum Spa, several restaurants, bike rentals, and easy access to golf and tennis as well as the rest of Hilton Head Island with plenty of great shops and restaurants. During renovation, they added a shade pool and hot tub, as well as a zero-entry heated lagoon swimming pool and children’s area and we saw all of these in constant use.

We were huge fans of the small gift shop in the lobby called Pearls Market and purchased several gifts there including local perfumes and lovely Christmas ornaments. There is also a fitness center although I will just admit here and now that we never visited it, not even once. We loved the sunset colors they chose for their renovation – the color orange everywhere was really bright and beautiful. The lobby was especially impressive. Huge and beautifully decorated, it was quite an introduction to the resort.

Eating Our Way Through St. Louis

St. LouisThere were a lot of things we absolutely loved about our trip to St. Louis, Missouri. The Embassy Suites Downtown was the perfect hotel in the perfect location, the Arch was amazing, and the city is comprised of so many lovely neighborhoods, gorgeous parks, and a scenic downtown area that you could spend weeks there and never see the same place twice.

However.

It was the food of St. Louis that totally wowed us.

We are huge fans of eating fabulous food and it’s a big part of any trip we take. We book foodie tours to sample the best of a city, we search out great restaurants, and we enjoy the local ice cream, candy, and whatever specialties we happen upon. Lucky for us, on this trip, we were escorted around the city in grand style by a new friend who enjoys food just as much as we do. The St. Louis CVC kindly hooked us up with Nancy Milton who loves her city and spent two days sharing with us exactly why it’s one of the greatest cities in the U.S.

Our first morning in the Gateway to the West, we headed down to the atrium on the fourth floor of the Embassy Suites St. Louis – Downtown for the free hot breakfast which is offered at all of their hotels. Now, just let me say that we are not normally fans of the free hot breakfast offered by most hotels. We have been known to completely bypass most of them to grab a doughnut or drive through McDonald’s – they are that bad.

This is so not the case with Embassy Suites.

Not only do they offer an extensive buffet, they also have a fresh, hot omelet bar. A fresh, hot omelet bar is one of our favorite things in the entire world and we took full advantage of this one during our visit. They also serve a light lunch and dinner in the atrium which we never took advantage of since we had a completely fabulous kitchenette in our suite, complete with a fridge, sink, and microwave and whenever we were not snacking in our suite, we were eating somewhere in town.

Although I do have to add that I was heartbroken when we arrived in our suite, spread out all our belongings and I realized we had left our rather large bag of packed snacks at home. We had to immediately find a grocery store and this was surprisingly not a problem. We were both amazed that there was a large, full-service grocery store only a couple of blocks away from the hotel where we purchased duplicates of almost everything we had left at home.

Panama City Beach for Families

Having fun on the floats at Shell Island

Having fun on the floats at Shell Island

Panama City Beach, situated along the beautiful Emerald Coast of Florida with sparkling white sand and gorgeous Caribbean colored water, used to be the destination of choice for spring break for college students. It still is, but after spending a week there this summer with my grown daughter and seven-year old grandson, I can assure you that it’s a perfect family destination as well.

We split our stay between the Bay Point Wyndham, located a few miles away from the beach on St. Andrews Bay, and the Laketown Wharf Resort, right on the beach. Both destinations were perfect for families. A two bedroom villa at the Wyndham with a kitchenette made it easy to keep snacks and drinks available and offered the perfect sleeping arrangements for our family. With five gorgeous pools, on-site restaurants, an incomparable spa, and a world-class golf course, this resort is an idyllic location. One of the amenities we enjoyed the most was their free shuttle out to Shell Island, an unspoiled and quite lovely National Park located just a few miles away, where you will probably see dolphins.
