Searching for Snow: The Grand Traverse Resort

The first “Searching for Snow” article is HERE. And our journey continues.

The Great Snow Trip of 2014.

Resort with Snow RevisedOur first sight of The Grand Traverse Resort was a soaring, glass tower in the distance sparkling in the afternoon sun as we drove along a road through Michigan, near Traverse City which was lined with deep snow on both sides.

We both noticed it but never dreamed it was part of the resort we were visiting. It wasn’t until we got closer that we realized that it was indeed a major part of the resort.

We were in a rush when we checked in as the drive had taken a little longer than planned, so we basically tossed our luggage at the obliging bellman who kindly put it in our room for us and dashed to the spa where we had massage appointments.  The spa at the resort is located near the fitness center and an indoor pool but once you enter the quiet and lovely smelling spa area, all you think about is relaxation. There are fitness classes available as well as a dry sauna and a relaxation room with comfortable furniture where we sat to catch our breath after we changed into the spa robe and slippers. The 7,000 square foot area occupies two floors and includes treatments rooms, a salon, and a small boutique. I recommend you take a lot more time than we did to enjoy it! Be sure to try the cherry-infused massage as the fabulous sweet cherry smell really adds to the experience.

After we were completely relaxed, we dressed and headed up to our room in the tower. The resort has a variety of accommodations available from rooms in the newly built tower to those in the original hotel and condos as well. In fact, they have over 600 guest rooms and condos in total.

Getaway to the Wild Dunes Resort, Isle of Palms, South Carolina

Beach WalkwayIt’s no wonder I had never heard of Isle of Palms before our girlfriends getaway. A tiny barrier island of only about 6 square miles, it is tucked neatly against the South Carolina coast, separated from the mainland by the Intracoastal Waterway. Technically considered part of the Charleston metropolitan area and only a short 30 minute drive away, this lovely little gem hosts about 4,000 inhabitants, shops, restaurants, and an array of gorgeous homes for both full-time residents and vacationers who have kept this beautiful place a secret for years. But the true jewel in the crown of this fabulous location is the expansive and wonderful Wild Dunes Resort, the perfect place for a getaway.

Long considered Charleston’s Island Resort, much as Tybee Island is consider Savannah’s beach, Wild Dunes Resort is a great place to stay if you want to visit Charleston but also have access to a beautiful beach area – the best of both worlds! I love a resort which offers an assortment of accommodations as there are so many different types of travelers and getaways and this resort offers rooms and suites, condos and beach house rentals. You can stay pool-side, beach-side, court-side, or course-side; just take your pick.

Photo Friday: Dog Sledding at Crystal Mountain

We had a ball dog sledding when we were in Michigan and the run at Crystal Mountain was just fabulous. Tom took the camera on his run and got some amazing shots.

Searching for Snow: The Grand Geneva Resort

Resort with Snow RevisedHosted Accommodations

The Great Snow Trip of 2014 began with the vague thought that it might be nice to go somewhere for my birthday on January 20.

Somewhere different.

Somewhere that Tom would like which meant…somewhere with snow.

So I looked north. North to Wisconsin and Michigan where they had substantially more snow than we did – not difficult since we rarely get more than a couple of inches here in Lexington, Kentucky. I began contacting resorts that were billed as ski destinations even though we don’t care about skiing but because I knew they would have snow.

And the trip began falling into place.

The Great Snow Trip of 2014.

The Great Snow Trip of 2014.

The first location we would visit would be The Grand Geneva Resort in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. This visit actually began with an email requesting a visit to Timber Ridge which is also part of their property but we decided this family orientated location with a water park would be better for another time with our grandson in tow, so we settled on The Grand Geneva Resort.

And we are so glad we did.

5 Important Things to Know About Winter in Michigan

Winter1. Seasonal Roads. Who knew? We southerners have never heard of seasonal roads, but they are all over northern Michigan. These are back country roads that are not plowed so the snow gets pretty deep. Most are used as snowmobile trails and it’s technically illegal to travel on them, although there are no signs that say so. Don’t attempt to drive on these roads unless you want to get stuck even if your GPS sends you that way, although of course  I’m not speaking from personal experience.

Oh, of course I am.

We left the quite fabulous Crystal Mountain to head to The Homestead and managed to get stuck in the deep snow on the way. We called the folks at Crystal Mountain who called the folks at The Homestead to make sure we had arrived safely who then both called to confirm we were indeed OK. And this is why we recommend you visit Michigan.

Immediately.

2. Vehicles. Don’t attempt to visit this area without a four wheel drive, all wheel drive, or snow tires. They are really very good about clearing the roads but it snows most days and the roads pretty much always have at least some snow on them. People who live in the area don’t let any amount of snow stop them, but they are prepared with the right vehicles. You should also have an emergency kit in your car. When we got stuck in the snow, it was only for a few minutes but it made us realize we were woefully unprepared. We didn’t even have a shovel to dig out.

Photo Friday: Tiger Drinking From Puddle at the St. Louis Zoo

We spent a lovely afternoon strolling around the St. Louis Zoo and Tom got this incredible photo of a tiger casually drinking from a puddle.

We want snow and we want it NOW.

This will be us. In our dreams

This will be us. In our dreams.

Ironically, we have actually returned from this trip to find plenty of snow on the ground here and schools closed. But we still adored all the snow we found on our trip, the great snow activities, and the wonderful people we met. More on all those topics soon, I promise.

So Lexington, Kentucky is unseasonably cold as I write this. That crazy Polar Vortex has swirled down from the north and created cold conditions that we have not seen here since the late 70’s. It is so frigidly, unnervingly cold that school has been called off not because of snow but because it’s so cold, it’s actually not safe for children to stand and wait for the school bus.

However.

It’s like Narnia when the White Witch was running the show – it’s always winter but never Christmas.

It’s bitterly cold but no snow.

This is extremely disappointing for us as we love snow.

LOVE. IT.

So there is really only one thing to do.

Find some snow.

By the time you read this, we will be a$$ deep in snow. Or least we hope so. We also sincerely hope that we will not be doing this as we cross-country ski for the very first time.

bad-start GIF

We are working with several resorts in the area and are extremely excited to visit each of them for the first and hopefully not the last time as it would be wonderful to find snow that is just a fairly short drive away for us. We travel writers spend a great deal of time planning our trips and, when we visit several different locations, those trips can get pretty confusing. I had to coordinate each of the locations and not end up criss-crossing through several states so I’m pretty proud that I ended up with a nice, circular trip that sends us back home at the end and not up into Canada.

Although we love Canada, don’t get me wrong.

Most of the resorts not only kindly agreed to work with us, they also provided spa experiences which, if we spend as much time on outdoor activities as I anticipate, we will strongly need. We are just hoping they will let us ride the chair lifts up to the top of the mountain, take photos, and ride the chair lift back down. No actual skiing. Just observing.

That counts as an outdoor activity, right? Read more »

Ten Foods You Should Add Immediately to your Bucket List

tastingI say to heck with suggesting travel bucket lists to anyone or even making our own; there are so many places we want to go and that we have already visited that it would be absurdly long.

Besides, how can you possibly recommend a limited number of locations when there are so many incredible places and amazing experiences yet to find? And what we love may not necessarily be what you would love.

However.

When it comes to food, there are some we have had that you absolutely must try. Here’s just a few.

1. Fried Strawberries at Coco’s Sunset Grille on Tybee Island, Georgia. I wrote about this restaurant here and all the food was wonderful but those strawberries. Dipped in doughnut batter, deep fried, and served with a dusting of cinnamon sugar and whipped cream, they are to die for.

2. St. Louis Style Pizza at Imo’s in St. Louis, Missouri. We have had lots of pizza in lots of different places – we even took a pizza tasting tour in Chicago. It was all delicious but nothing like this ooey-gooey delight you can only get in St. Louis.

Hyatt Regency McCormick Place Chicago

ChicagoHosted Accommodations

Even though Chicago is only about a six hour drive from us, we just discovered this fabulous place in the last year. We were headed to Door County, Wisconsin for a press trip and, just to make the drive a little more relaxing, we decided to stop somewhere, anywhere, oh what about Chicago?

One of the best travel decisions we have ever made.

We had no idea Chicago was such a great place to visit. Totally walkable – a big plus for us – with plenty of things to do see and do and absolutely great food – another big plus. This was also the first time we had ever seen one of the Great Lakes and we stood like a couple of stunned school kids and just kept saying “it’s so big” and “you can’t even see the other side” and we still say that whenever we talk about it. Not only was the lake absolutely astonishing, it also had huge chunks of ice in it and this was equally amazing for us.

We have been to Chicago twice now, in the winter and summer, and it’s incredibly different in those two seasons. But we like both for different reasons. When we returned last summer for our cruise of Lake Michigan with Blount Small Ship Adventures, we decided to arrive a few days early and spend some time really seeing the Windy City. We had a great time and discovered that Chicago has some of the best pizza in the world and that they are also rabid ice hockey fans when we found ourselves in the middle of a city-wide parade after the Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup. And we also discovered one of the nicest, most luxurious, and friendliest hotel we have ever stayed in.

The Hyatt McCormick Place is conveniently located within an easy walk of Lake Michigan and Soldier Field in an urban neighborhood of shops, restaurants, and townhomes. The hotel is the fourth largest Hyatt in the world, the fourth largest hotel in Chicago, and is often used for convention businesses, as the McCormick Convention Center is located just an enclosed skybridge away. In fact, I went into a bit of a time warp when I realized the annual national library association was having their conference at the hotel when we visited; after years of attending and presenting at those conferences, it was strange to just ignore all the workshops and head out for a day of fun!

The Hyatt soars into the Chicago sky.
