Girlfriends Getaway to the Gateway to the West: St. Louis, Missouri

archOn your girlfriend getaway to St. Louis, you’ll be looking up… way up! The St. Louis Gateway Arch is one of the main things that draws people to this beautiful city in the Midwest United States. Arcing over the city on the bank of the Mississippi River, the Arch is a 630 foot high monument to the westward expansion of the United States. Covered in stainless steel that gleams in the sun, the Arch is the tallest man-made monument in the United States, the world’s tallest arch, and an internationally recognized symbol of St. Louis.

Embassy Suites: Perfect for Girlfriend Getaways

But before you visit the Arch and begin your tour of this amazing city, check into the Embassy Suites Downtown for a relaxing and comfortable stay. We have discovered that Embassy Suites is a great place for a girlfriends getaway because all of their rooms are suites with a completely separate bedroom, nice living room, a small kitchen area, and dining table. The comfortable couch in the living room also makes into a bed so you can easily have a two-bedroom setup. This is absolutely wonderful when you compare it to a small hotel room where you have no room to spread out and relax and you have to go out (and pay) for every single meal. There’s even a very nice flat screen television in both rooms so if you don’t agree on the evening’s entertainment, no problem!

Relaxing at Sterling Shores Condos, Destin

beach viewHosted Accommodations

We had just heard about the weather back home.

Ice, ice, and even more ice were on the way to Kentucky. Lolling on our sun-drenched balcony at our fabulous Sterling Shores condo in Destin, Florida, it was hard to grasp that the weather would be that bad right when we would be driving home.

But it was happening and the idea of driving right through the worst of it on ice-covered roads was not very appealing.  In fact, it would be outright dangerous. So I emailed my buddy with Sterling Resorts about possibly staying in our condo a little longer. The weather was really bad, we were concerned, was staying longer a possibility?

And she immediately arranged two extra night for us. So nice.

Ok then. Good. We were safe and sound and would not have to drive on slick, dangerous roads. We were being very sensible. Very mature. Very…

Wait.

That meant we had more time at the beach! More time for shopping! More time for eating fabulous seafood! More time for lolling on our balcony enjoying our view.

So we did all three just as much as possible.

First, we proceeded to enjoy our lovely condo a little longer. We had pulled through the gates into the tranquil community at Sterling Shores just a few days prior and been amazed at how beautiful the property was. Gorgeously landscaped and immaculately maintained, it’s a perfect getaway location with easy access to local restaurants and shopping. It’s a short walk to the beach but most of the units have a beach view – the higher the floor, the better the view.

Luau Condos, Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort

BeachHosted Accommodations

I’m just going to be totally honest here.

I’m a little prejudiced about Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort.

I realize travel writers should be impartial and we should totally write about the negatives along with the positives when we review a location so you can make an unbiased judgment but when there are no negatives what can you do?

It’s just.

I love Sandestin.

I was there for the first time back in 2011 and began my infatuation phase which normally fades with time but, in this case, has deepened into a long and lasting love affair.

When I had a chance to return again in 2013, I fairly leaped at the chance. And then my most recent visit in February was just as fabulous at the other times. Maybe more so because there was a dog parade.

Yes. That’s what I said.

But let me back up.

Once again, I was heading out on a beach adventure with two of my favorite travel partners, my sister and SIL who love the beach just as much as I do. Along with seafood, shopping, and the ability to spend an entire day doing virtually nothing and calling it a good day. We were actually on our way to Sarasota where I would be writing some articles about the area but since we could easily make a stop in Destin and since Sandestin was right on the way…well, of course we had to stop.

The folks at Sandestin were, as usual, lovely and obliging about working with a travel writer dragging along two other women on a girlfriends getaway and offered us a stay at the gorgeous Luau complex overlooking the fabulous white sand beaches and aquamarine waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

Opened in 2006, Luau is the newest of Sandestin’s luxury beach rental properties and is right across the street from the Elephant Walk Restaurant and just a short walk to the beach. Luau offers a number of different sized condos from a studio with a kitchenette to a three bedroom condo with a full kitchen. They kindly gave us each a bedroom with the three bedroom condo which is technically a two bedroom condo with a studio adjoining it. It was roomy and lovely and quite, quite fabulous. The living room was beautifully furnished with really nice leather furniture, a flat screen television, and an amazing view from the large balcony.

Photo Friday: Destin, Florida Sunset

For a change, this is a photo that I took. Normally, Tom is the photographer and I don’t take many good photos when I am traveling without him. But this sunset in Destin at the Henderson Park Inn was pretty spectacular.

Who Knew Tommy Bahama Had Restaurants?

imagesKJIWCA00Hosted Meal

The first time I discovered Tommy Bahama had restaurants was in Hawaii.

I mean, I knew there Tommy Bahama stores, obviously. But restaurants?

Uh. No.

I was in Hawaii on a press trip, we were shopping (as you do) at The Shops at Mauna Lani on the big island and a fellow travel writer suggested we have lunch at Tommy Bahama.

Really? They have food?

Yes. Yes they do.

We went upstairs into one of they most idyllic locations for a meal I have ever seen. It was open-air, like many restaurants in Hawaii, and a warm ocean breeze wafted over us as we ordered.

In all honesty, I can’t remember what I ordered aside from the cake. They have this cake. This totally amazing cake. It’s called Pina Colada Cake and it’s a vanilla cake with Myers Dark Rum, diced pineapple, white chocolate mousse and toasted coconut. I really didn’t need dessert but the description sounded so fabulous, I had to order it. It was absolutely delicious but astonishingly huge. We were leaving the next morning and I had absolutely no business getting the rest of that cake to go but I did it anyway. I carted that to-go bag right onto the plane and I inhaled that leftover cake in the middle of the flight and everyone around me was drooling with envy.

So. No Tommy Bahama restaurants for several years.

There are not a lot of locations and there just didn’t happen to be one anywhere near where I was traveling until. Until February when I went on a girlfriends getaway to both Destin and Sarasota and both locations had a Tommy Bahama restaurant. It was time to contact that PR person who had been asking me to visit a location and tell him I would finally be near one and, well actually, I would be near two and could totally visit both of them if he wanted and this is how I managed to eat two equally wonderful meals at two completely different Tommy Bahama restaurants and unreservedly recommend both.

Our first visit was to the Sarasota location on St. Armands Circle close to Lido Key, Siesta Key, Longboat Key, and Ana Maria Island. Since we were staying on Siesta Key, it was an easy drive for us and was located in a really nice little village with lots of upscale shops which we enjoyed browsing. This is the only restaurant that is not in the same location as the store but you can enter it through the back of the store or around the corner though its own private entrance. We were shown upstairs to the second story dining room which had a really nice view of the area through the large windows.

The island style furnishings were a pleasure but it was the friendly service that really made our meal memorable. Our waitress absolutely could not have been nicer and the general manager, Thai Branton, came out and spent quite a while just talking and visiting with us. We thought nothing could top the lovely experience we were having and then they brought out the food. The food. First, I had the Crab Bisque. Now, I’m pretty picky about my crab bisque. It has to be not too crabby/fishy and have just the right amount of cream and sherry. This was perfect. Hot, creamy, and wonderful.

Delicious bisque.

Delicious bisque.

Five Best Beach Getaways for Mother’s Day

mothers day beachMother’s Day is coming up on Sunday May 11th, and if your mom loves the beach (and who doesn’t?) here are some great places to relax and enjoy some surf and sun for Mother’s Day.

1. Sonesta Resort, Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.

Located on the scenic and beautiful island of Hilton Head, off the coast of South Carolina, Sonesta Resort is decorated in bright orange shades which echo the lovely sunsets you can watch from the amazing beaches on the island. Tucked away on Shipyard Drive in a perfectly beautiful 11 acres filled with trees, blooming flowers, and a glimpse of the Atlantic Ocean, you will be immediately impressed when you arrive. The resort offers a fabulous swimming pool complex, the Arum Spa, several restaurants, bike rentals, and easy access to golf and tennis as well as the rest of Hilton Head Island with plenty of great shops and restaurants. Pearls Market, the small gift shop in the lobby has a great selection of gifts and we purchased local perfumes and lovely Christmas ornaments. Our one bedroom suite had a large living room with a flat screen television and a nice balcony overlooking the lush foliage and pool area, a separate dining room/office area, and a completely separate bedroom with an adjoining full bath. In the dining area were a small fridge, a sink, and a Keurig coffee maker which was really handy for light lunches or a quick snack. The suite also had some great added touches like night lights at the bottom of the bedside tables that came on when you got up at night and a television that swiveled so it could be seen from the living room or dining area. A full breakfast is available every morning, complete with a wonderful omelet bar, at Heywards, the restaurant right off the lobby.

Photo Friday: Koi in Forest Park

These fish were huge! We were amazed at the variety of colors and how they crowded up to anyone with bread crumbs, jostling each other and even fighting ducks for the food.

Scrumptious, Savory, Succulent Chicago Pizza Tours

pizza guyHosted Activity

So.

We love pizza.

We love food.

We love foodie tours.

When an opportunity came along to go on a pizza tour in Chicago with Chicago Pizza Tours last summer, we immediately began salivating.

What could go wrong?

Well.

Nothing with the tour itself. It was perfect in every way and we enjoyed every single, scrumptious bite.

However.

Let me set the scene in Chicago for you. The Blackhawks had just won the Stanley Cup. And Chicago went insane.

In all honesty, we were pretty oblivious to the whole situation. Tom is a hockey lover and I’m sure he had some idea that the Blackhawks had won but neither of us had a clue what this meant. So when we planned our pizza tour and the entire city planned a parade at the same time, it caused a little problem for us. Luckily, we were staying at the Hyatt McCormick Place and they had a very good idea what we were in for and offered us the hotel car to get us to the tour. Our driver knew exactly where we needed to go to begin the tour – Pizano’s Pizza and Pasta downtown on Madison Street.

Our first stop on the pizza tour.

Our first stop on the pizza tour.

Cataract Surgery Via Medical Tourism

beachbeachbeach2beach2beach2beach2beach2beach2Catamaran IllustrationVacations + medical procedures.

The two would not seem to go together at all but “medical tourism”, a term applied to patients traveling to other destinations to undergo medical procedures, is becoming more popular. Medical tourism used to be mostly associated with international travel but it is also becoming a growing trend with domestic travel as well.

Travelers sometimes travel for medical care because it is substantially cheaper in the destination they are visiting but it can also be to visit a lovely U.S. destination to undergo their procedure in a state-of-the-arts facility with a world-class doctor. If you have to get a medical procedure, why not enjoy a fabulous getaway for recovery at the same time?

A perfect example of this synchronicity is the extended stay package offered by the Wild Dunes Resort on Isle of Palms near Charleston, South Caroline in the fall and winter. Stay for two weeks or longer and you can enjoy this beautiful island in one of their charming condos and rental homes and receive discounts on everything from housekeeping services to restaurant meals.
